The Farewell

The Farewell

I have a craving for poignant films and the critically-acclaimed, indie darling, The Farewell is just what the doctor ordered. Starring Awkwafina and directed by Lulu Wang, this film centers on a Chinese-American woman, Billi who learns that her grandmother in China is dying from terminal lung cancer. She travels to China to visit her Nai Nai, but struggles to cope with her family keeping the diagnosis a secret from the matriarch.

I was deeply touched by each of the performances and Wang’s directional style. Moreover, I was encouraged to learn, it achieved the US box office record for best per-screen-average in 2019 on its release, and has been tipped as a potential Oscar contender. If you haven’t seen it yet and you like indie cinema, I highly recommend it.
