To protect endangered livestock and poultry breeds from extinction.
The Livestock Conservancy was founded in 1977 to conserve rare breeds of chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, cattle, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs and rabbits. Today's rare breeds are quite different from the "factory farm" stocks, which are productive but require intensive husbandry. The rare breeds retain survival qualities such as disease resistance, foraging efficiency, maternal abilities, and longevity, which make them a perfect fit for organic, grass-based and humane sustainable agriculture. As well as being useful to farmers today, rare breeds represent the genetic diversity essential for domestic animals to adapt to changing environmental conditions in the future.
To protect farm animals from cruelty, inspire change in the way society views and treats farm animals, and promote compassionate vegan living.
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming and encourage a new awareness and understanding about farm animals. They are the nation’s largest and most effective farm animal rescue and protection organization and promote policies that support animal welfare and vegetarianism/veganism. Farm Sanctuary rescues thousands of animals and cares for them at their sanctuaries, educates millions of people about the effects of factory farming on our health and the environment, as well as advocates for laws to prevent suffering and promote compassion by reaching out to legislators and businesses to bring about institutional reforms.
